Android app access rolls out to BlackBerry 10 users

BlackBerry 10 users can now run BlackBerry apps and Android apps, courtesy of the latest update to the mobile operating system.
Launched on Thursday, BlackBerry 10 OS 10.3.1 provides the usual access to the BlackBerry World app store but also adds entry to the Amazon Appstore, where users can download a variety of Android apps. The latest update has started to roll out for several BlackBerry 10 devices, including the Passport, Z30, Z3, Z10, Q10 and Q5, along with the Porsche Design P'9983 and P'9982 smartphones.
The update comes at a time when BlackBerry has steadily fallen to the bottom of the mobile phone heap.
At last count, BlackBerry's global market share was less than 1 percent as most smartphone buyers have gravitated toward Apple and Android. Still, the company continues to battle back by launching new phones, such as the BlackBerry Classic and the Passport in hopes of gaining customers who still like the physical QWERTY keyboards and other BlackBerry features. And BlackBerry continues to update its latest mobile OS with new features designed to appeal to existing users and possibly attract new ones. The ability to run Android apps is one feature that might persuade more people to give BlackBerry phones a shot.
The latest update adds other features as well.
The BlackBerry Assistant is the company's attempt at a voice assistant, a la Siri, Cortana and Google Now. BlackBerry's first digital assistant is designed to help you work with your apps by responding to questions or comments in one of two ways. If you type something, the BlackBerry Assistant responds silently. If you speak, the assistant responds by voice.
BlackBerry Blend displays text messages, emails, documents and other content from your phone on your computer or tablet. The BlackBerry Hub has been enhanced with a new option called "Instant Actions." These allow you to organize your inbox without having to go through each individual email.
A new Meeting Mode sets your phone to silent mode while you're in a meeting and then turns it back to active mode after the meeting is over. BlackBerry has added back certain keyboard shortcuts for phones that sport a physical keyboard, where you can assign a specific function to just about every letter.
The camera has been upgraded with a panoramic feature and other enhancements. And finally, BlackBerry promises a 15 percent jump in battery life by letting you pick which apps and features you want to stay active or become passive.
The new version is already rolling out to customers in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Asia Pacific region. Those of you in North America should see the update arrive over the coming weeks. But your timing will vary depending on your mobile carrier. A spokeswoman for BlackBerry told CNET that some Canadian customers of wireless carrier Rogers have already started to receive the update.

7Reasons You Should Quit Facebook in 2015

Ten years ago Facebook was just cresting as the cool new social media site that helped you keep in touch with the people you didn’t actually like in high school. We fed it our thoughts and feelings, shared our meals and locations and our top ten movie lists, kept it up-to-date on our relationship status, political views, favorite links, and personal information — all in the name of staying connected, and all without a thought to our security. But with a decade of questions regarding how Facebook makes money now answered, and a general understanding of how sharing information online can be dangerous (while the platform constantly updates its security protocol), we continue to use it anyway, even though many of us are just checking in as ritual and have threatened our exit from Facebook for years.

Of course, screen time in moderation is, for the most part, perfectly acceptable, and social media can offer a few genuinely beneficial uses. But before you log in or tap that app on your smartphone again, here are a few reasons to quit Facebook in 2015.

It Wastes Your TimeIt's estimated that the average casual user (17 minutes per day on Facebook) who has been active on the site for 10 years has wasted upwards of 40 entire days of their lives scrolling and liking and commenting on pictures and posts. And more engaged users, who spend at least an hour a day on the site, have clocked 150 days feeding the Facebook beast during the same time. Think about how long you spend on the site each day, and what else could be a more productive use of your time.

Facebook Uses You to Sell Stuff...In 2012, the site manipulated posts from 689,000 accounts without consent in an experiment that examined whether or not it could affect your emotions by making a few edits on your page. The study was done, according to Facebook, to "improve our services and to make the content people see on Facebook as relevant and engaging as possible." Skeptics think it was really used to discover the monetary benefit of a Like. COO Sheryl Sandberg later apologized, adding that they "never meant to upset you."

And Targets You with AdvertisementsOne time you wanted to buy a thing, and then you searched for that thing, and six months later Facebook is still reminding you that you should think about buying that thing, even if you already bought the thing. Yes, most sites do this thanks to embedded cookies, but only Facebook seamlessly posts these ads in your timeline with enough regularity that you can only assume your friend has an odd obsession with the latest Norelco razor.

It's Bad for Your HealthFacebook isn't just a harmless website dedicated to cataloging your vacations, poor wardrobe choices, and myopic thoughts on sporting events (which can both define or destroy relationships), it can actually do you harm. Studies hint that it can impact your immune system and inhibit the release of growth hormones, impair digestion and vision, limit thinking and kill creativity, and affect sleep patterns and happiness.

"Who Are These People, Anyway?"The average adult has 338 friends on Facebook and probably doesn't know more than 10 percent of them anymore, or at all. Many of them likely have new lives, some have new last names, new passions, new facial hair, and new humans they're now responsible for keeping alive (read: babies). These are not the friends you knew, and semi-casually keeping up with them is a waste of time that could be better spent with new, real friends. Or on Twitter.

"But I Don't Care About Privacy"Fair. That's your right. But the problem is that we're setting precedent for the future without yet understanding how it will affect the free and open Web, and simultaneously creating an internet that relies on you having a Facebook account to access sites that are not Facebook. As one of nearly 1.2 billion users to date, odds are decent that your account won't be hacked by someone with ill-will toward your family. That doesn't mean that permitting easy access to your information goes without consequence, both immediately and decades from now.

Nothing You Post Actually MattersVery few people care what you're doing, whom you're with, where you're eating, or what you just bought, and the people who do were probably right next to you when you did it. We all saw that funny Ice Bucket Challenge video, and if we didn’t see it, it's fine. We're all fine. You'll sleep well without knowing which childhood toys you owned are now worth a fortune, and you will absolutely "believe what happened next" on Upworthy, because someone took time to write about it. These articles only exist because you share them on Facebook, and you only share them because they exist. So, instead, just invite a friend over to talk about how much you both loved Save By the Bell. The internet can only take so much nostalgia.

3places better than Craigslist to buy and sell used items

When you want to buy or sell something used online, your first thought might be to use Craigslist. After all, it's the site that brought the newspaper classifieds into the digital world and today has nearly 40 million new listings every month.
Of course, using Craigslist does have valid concerns. You might deal with a buyer or seller who tries to cheat you with bad payment or an item that's different than what was listed. There are many stories of people going to meet a buyer or seller only to get robbed — or worse. That's why it's essential to meet in a public place and let someone know where you're going. Or, it might be smart to bring them along, too.
Fortunately, Craigslist isn't the only game in town. Here are three sites that fix Craigslist's biggest problems.
A safer Craigslist
If safety is your primary concern, then OfferUp is where you should start. It created the innovative TruYou system to verify the identity of buyers and sellers.
The TruYou system works with the site's app for Android and Apple gadgets. It lets you scan your ID so the website can verify your identity for other users on the site. Items sold by TruYou-verified sellers have a blue highlight.
There's also a rating system, so buyers and sellers can let the rest of the community know what they thought about a particular transaction. Was your item described accurately? Was the other person friendly? This is the place to let everyone know what to expect.
Buying is really easy with OfferUp. If you like something, just click on it to be taken to the item page. From there, you can make an offer. You'll see the price the owner is asking for next to the item, but you might be able to talk them down. If the seller accepts your offer, you can set up a time and place to meet up and get your stuff.
Selling is simple, too. Using the app, you can take a picture of the item you want to sell, add details like your asking price, and then upload it. The whole process is done in no time.
Buy and sell ‘like-new’ clothes from brands you love
Used clothes aren't something you'd normally want to buy online — especially from Craigslist. You never know where they've been or what condition they're really in.
ThredUp aims to change that. The site has a strict set of Quality Standards for all clothes it accepts. It employs a team of fashion experts to go through all the clothes and approve them for sale.
Clothing is not all you can save money on, though. You can also find accessories, from all sorts of shoes to purses and handbags on the site. That's where you can really save the big bucks. Imagine getting a ‘looks just as good as new’ Coach bag for a huge discount. You can save money on clothes for your kids and grandkids, too.
If you have nice clothes you want to get rid of before updating your wardrobe, you can sell them on the site, too. ThredUp depends on people like you to collect its inventory. It's easy to send in your old stuff to make a little extra cash.
Find garage sales near you
One of the best places to get used items is garage sales. Not only can you physically examine the item, you can do some haggling to get a better price.
You just need to find a good garage sale, and that's where GSALR.com comes in. Just enter your location in the search box to see garage sales going on in your area on a Google Map. Then click on the red location flags for more details like time and location of the sale, or scroll through the listings on the right side of the page.
If you don't care about travel distance, you can browse the listings or sift through photos by clicking "List" or "Photos" at the top of the page.
Need to narrow your search and filter your results? Click on "Search Filters," located at the top left of the page, and enter a new location, the day of a sale, or enter keywords to look for a certain item like furniture or antiques.
Once you've found sales near you, you can add to a favorites list by clicking the favorite button. When you're done adding favorites, click "View Route & Directions" to get directions.
If you're in the mood for selling, you can add your own garage sale to the site.
Bonus: Get tons of free valuable stuff people are giving away
What do you do if you have used items you can't sell? Don't just throw it in the trash; give them away on Freecycle.
Freecycle is a non-profit that lets you post your unwanted items to give away. It's kind of like Craigslist — but only with free stuff.
To get started, create a free account and post the items you want to get rid of. Be sure to include a full description. Photos help, too.
On the flip side, if you're in the market for something in particular, you can post a want ad and see if anyone responds. Or, just cruise the site and see what kind of free stuff you can get. I mean, who doesn't love free stuff?
When I looked in my area, there was a range of items, from television sets and moving boxes to desktop computers, children’s clothing, plants, and fitness equipment.

Apple is working on creating a car: WSJ

(Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) has a secret lab working on the creation of an Apple-branded electric car, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The project has designed a vehicle that looks like a minivan, the newspaper quoted one person as saying. It would take years to finish the project, and it is not certain if Apple will eventually build a car, the Journal said. (on.wsj.com/1zBD9sL)
The news signals that Apple is sharply raising its ambitions for automotive technology, which has become a prime area of interest for Silicon Valley companies ranging from Google Inc (GOOGL.O) to ride-sharing firm Uber to electric car-maker Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA.O).
The connected car, or vehicles with a full range of Internet and software services beyond mere navigation and communications, is considered one of the ripest areas for expansion for technology companies.
Last March, Apple unveiled CarPlay, which lets drivers access contacts on their iPhones, make calls or listen to voicemails without taking their hands off the steering wheel.
Now, the head of Mercedes-Benz's Silicon Valley research and development unit, Johann Jungwirth, has defected to Apple, according to a LinkedIn profile, which said his title was head of Mac Systems Engineering.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
The Financial Times reported earlier that Apple had created the secret lab and that Jungwirth had joined the new research team. (on.ft.com/1A4ELi5)
Two sources told Reuters that Apple has recently tried to recruit from the automotive industry in fields such as robotics.
The research lab was set up late last year, soon after Apple revealed its forthcoming smart watch and latest iPhones, the Financial Times said.
The Wall Street Journal said that the Apple project, code-named "Titan," employed several hundred people working a few miles from Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California.
Apple executives have met with contract manufacturers including Magna Steyr, a unit of Magna International Inc (MG.TO). A Magna spokeswoman declined to comment.
Google is working on plans for a self-driving car, but that is not part of Apple's plan, the Journal said.
Trying to design and build an actual car would mark a change for the iPhone maker, which researches and discards plenty of projects but has so far mainly stuck to its core expertise in mobile and electronic devices.
But it has been open about wanting to integrate its core iOS software into automobiles with CarPlay.
Along with HomeKit and HealthKit, the idea is to extend Apple's software dominance into industries including home devices, healthcare, and automobiles.
